Individual Text Analysis Lectures

(Total = 2 Hours Per Text)

The text analysis lectures will focus on the analytical interpretation of the text you will be studying at school during Term 1 – 2024. These lectures will NOT cover the features, conventions and organisational structures involved in writing an analytical text response essay. These important topics will be addressed in Parts 1, 2 & 3 of the Unit 3 English course.

What Will be Covered?

During these information packed sessions:

• You will explore and analyse the dynamics and complexities of your text including characters’ traits and motivations, themes, concerns, conflicts and tensions in relationships, the complexities of plot and the function and impact of settings.
• You will study the role of point of view and investigate and analyse authorial intent so you can understand and appreciate the writer’s organisational and stylistic choices, the intended effect of those choices, and what messages the author is trying to convey.
• You will explore the historical context and the social and cultural values of your text and analyse how these elements influence the way a text is read or viewed, is understood by different audiences, and how it positions readers in different ways.
• You will investigate how the different features of your text create meaning and influence interpretation and examine the explicit and implied ideas, concerns and values being conveyed.
• You will participate in detailed analyses of key passages from your text.
• You will learn how to look beyond the literal meaning of words to find significance and unstated meanings.
• You will learn how to confidently use the relevant metalanguage to support your analyses.
• You will learn higher level analytical strategies and techniques to use when unpacking and responding to the different essay prompts that are likely to appear in your SACs and the VCE English exam.
• You will study examples of sophisticated essay responses that demonstrate strong analytical skills, insightful perception, and a deep conceptual understanding of the chosen text.
• You will discover the specific elements that differentiate A, B and C grade analytical text responses.
• You will apply the knowledge and skills acquired during this lecture, as well as the Area of Study 1 lectures as you plan and construct short analytical responses to select passages, and separately, as you analyse and mark sample introductions, body paragraphs and conclusions of varying standards.
