What Happens During the Master Classes?

During each Master Class, your teacher will use high impact teaching strategies to explain concepts, both familiar and unfamiliar, in a clear and concise way – using language that students find very easy to understand. They will frequently use audio-visual tools and apps to enhance your understanding of examinable materials. Your teachers will also work through questions in a step-by-step manner, explaining why each step is required, what information or calculation needs to be provided, alternate steps or methods that could be applied and how answers or solutions would be marked in the VCE exams. They will also highlight common student errors and the types of traps that result in the loss of valuable examination marks. Teachers will always work through a range of questions with different solution processes, different tricks and traps and very importantly – different applications of theoretical concepts. You’ll also get plenty of opportunities to test your skills and attempt questions on your own. And if you struggle with any question, your teachers will be on stand-by to assist, or you can ask them for help during the breaks or after your class.

Here’s a list of some of the things you’ll be doing and learning throughout the Master Class course:

You will complete an in-depth revision of examinable materials.
You will correct problem areas and fill any gaps in knowledge that cause you to lose valuable examination marks.
You will extend on the knowledge and skills acquired at school and achieve the standard expected in the VCE exams ahead of your state-wide VCE peers.
You will regularly revise important concepts and won’t need to re-learn topics before your exams!
You will concentrate on the sections of the course that are most important and that count for the greater number of examination marks.
You will work through a comprehensive set of exam-style questions with a VCE exam assessor (VCAA) who has significant experience marking the official VCE exams.
You will discover how VCE exams are marked and how to structure perfect answers that reflect the marking schemes used by assessors (the focus of the exams and the marking schemes change on a regular basis)!
You will strengthen existing and learn new problem-solving skills so you can confidently answer the harder questions in the exams.
You will learn how to recognise, process and avoid exam tricks and traps as well as potential sources of error.
You will gain significant exposure to highly probable examination questions. Students often state that many of the questions they work through in our Master Classes appear in their exams!

What’s the Pace Like?

The pace of the Master Classes depends on the academic standard of the students in each class. If a class is academically strong, the pace will be faster. If the majority of students aren’t confident with the concepts/topic being taught, the pace will be slower. Your teachers will regularly ask for your feedback and will alter their pace accordingly so that everyone is able to grasp the skills and concepts being addressed. You can also watch the recordings of your classes as many times you need or watch the recordings of classes delivered by different teachers, who will provide different explanations and perspectives that may just be what you need to fully grasp the concepts that were eluding you.

As for the students who have a strong understanding of course materials – at times, the pace may be a little slower than what you’d prefer, but if, and when this occurs, there are strategies that can be implemented to prevent your momentum from sliding, while giving other students the opportunity to grasp the concepts or techniques that are being addressed. Saying that, there are significant benefits to listening to your teachers and using these opportunities to thoroughly revise examinable materials rather than going through this process closer to the exams. You’ll also be confirming what you know and don’t know in a timely fashion, giving you the chance to correct missing gaps in knowledge before your exams.
