efforts so you can get the highest possible marks.

submitted by your VCE English peers.
To make sure you have everything you need to complete your exam preparations to the best of your
abilities and secure the highest possible examination marks.
To reduce stress levels and study loads in the challenging weeks before the exams.
So you can maximise your English Study Score.

What Will be Covered?

These lectures are designed to equip students with the skills and information needed to perform to a high standard in Section A of the VCE English exam. You will polish and refine the analytical skills you’ve developed to date and learn how to produce a sophisticated response that demonstrates strong skills of analysis, synthesis and evaluation, together with deep conceptual understanding of your text.

You will also:

Discover what the exam assessors expect from students aiming for the higher marks.
Learn further skills that will help you unpack and respond to the different essay prompts that could
appear in the English exam.
Broaden your knowledge of the different literary devices that authors use to create meaning, and
to influence the interpretation of a text.
Observe how to use textual evidence to effectively support your analysis of structural and language
elements relevant to the text.
Cover strategies you can use to convey strong critical faculties and that clearly demonstrate
your ability to construct sophisticated, insightful inferences to support your contention.
Participate in a detailed analysis of strategically chosen themes and passages and identify how the
features of your text (including literary techniques) are used to create meaning and
influence interpretation.
Identify the questions you should ask yourself when analysing texts so you can procure the
information needed to construct detailed, evidence-based analyses that respond to the given essay prompt.
Investigate how culture, values and context underpin the construction of texts, and how they can also
affect meaning and interpretation.
Discover how to elaborate on specific textual evidence so you can demonstrate the ability to engage
in more complex literary analysis.
Explore how to effectively demonstrate your mastery of metalanguage; particularly literary techniques,
to create insightful, detailed analyses of texts that employ the correct conventions, as well as
the language that’s specific to the exam assessment criteria.
Learn how to inject sophistication into your analytical responses and investigate examples that
demonstrate proficiency in executing complex, evidence-based analyses that are highly perceptive,
and that show an insightful understanding of the text.
Learn to recognise and appreciate the differences between low, mid and high scoring exam responses
and participate in a revealing discussion regarding how to convert an average exam response into
an outstanding analytical essay that demonstrates a sophisticated understanding of the text.
Analyse why the average mark awarded to the students who sat the VCE English exam last year
was characteristically low (52%), even though these students demonstrated they were well-prepared in
term of skills and knowledge, had a strong understanding of their text and displayed a sound command of essay structure.
Gain valuable suggestions to make your analytical interpretation stand out from the essays submitted by
your VCE English peers.
